Recently purchased privately for Rosemont Stud and their clients by Blue Sky Bloodstock, the three-year-old colt ZOUTENANT had his first barrier trial this time in, finishing a very encouraging second at Randwick on Tuesday, January 12.
A son of the Turangga Farm based Zizou, the Champion 2YO colt of his year, Zoutenant's previous form suggest he is a colt on the up and is one to watch as we head into the Autumn carnival.
A winner of the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic at just his second start, the colt travelled to the Gold Coast for the $2m Magic Millions 2YO Classic but was checked in the run and finished back in the field.
Resuming in late Winter after more than six months away from the track, Zoutenant showed he was in need of racing when finishing behind the likes of Japonisme, Sebring Sun and Raphael's Cat at his next few starts before getting his confidence back with a win.
Progressing from a Class Two victory at Hawkesbury three starts back, the colt then jumped to Listed level where he finished a very good fourth behind the Chris Waller-trained Counterattack in the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) on an unsuitably Heavy 8 track.
Second and third that day were stakes winners Haptic and Takedown, furthering highlighting that Zoutenant was improving at each and every start and that he was well and truly up to stakes class.
Literally thrown in the deep end at his next start when contesting the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes, Zoutenant finished second to the last start Group 1 Golden Rose winner Exosphere, with eventual Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Japonisme back in third.
Starting at the crazy odds of 200/1 that day, unfortunately for those punters out there, Zoutenant is likely to never start at that price again!
Jumping to the lead in his trial, he coasted along in front and when challenged by stablemate Al Nader in the straight he fought back, going down by a narrow head margin. Beaten into third was the Group 1 winner Rebel Dane.
With another trial a possibility before a race start, Zoutenant has shown that he is clearly one to watch and with plenty of lucrative races on offer for three-year-olds during the Sydney Autumn, his new owners are sure to have plenty of fun.
